Meet The Makers - Jermain

Posted on December 17, 2015 by Owen Hayward

Meet Jermain. He's the man who supplies all the raffia for our crochet bags.

Jermain and his team dye all the raffia in batches by hand using traditional artisan methods. With a background in chemical engineering, his attention to detail and exacting standards mean his raffia colour dyeing is second to none!

Here's a few photo's of Jermain and his team at work.

Natural raffia, ready to be dyed.

Powdered dyes, weighed and ready to be used.

The dye is added to large steel pots full of water over an open fire ready for the raffia

Raffia is added to the water/ dye solution and boiled over an open fire. Jermain and his team keep a close eye on the raffia, stiring and checking at regular intervals.

Dyed raffia is dried in the sunshine on the grass outside Jermain's workshop.

All the raffia is weighed in bundles and bagged up ready to be delivered to our crochet team.

Some of you may remember that we celebrated our first team wedding earlier this year as Nasaina, our raw materials manager, and Jemima, team cook extraordinaire, got married.

It is our great pleasure to introduce Nasaina and Jemima's first baby Natane Gaela!

Jemima and Natane are doing well and all are settling into life as a family of three. We've know Jemima and her family for many years now, Natane is the fourth generation we've have the privilege to meet! We're looking forward to seeing him grow over the years and hope that play our part in providing a stable and hope filled future for him through access to education and employment opportunities for Nasaina and Jemima.

We wish Nasaina, Jemima and baby Natane all the best and are looking forward to seeing them flourish over many more years of friendship and partnership.

Latest Bespoke Work

Posted on May 27, 2015 by Rebecca Barber

As well as designing and producing our own stunning collection of sustainable and ethical fashion accessories, we offer a bespoke design and manufacturing service. We're really proud to collaborate with some of the most prestigious luxury swim and resort wear brands in the world on bespoke projects and so excited to see some of our work featured in Elle and Vogue magazines this month!

These bespoke projects provide more opportunities for our team of artisan makers in Madagascar and allow us to continue to invest in the community where our workshop is based.

From the word go, we've trained and worked directly with local people in rural communities in Madagascar. There is no middle importer or hidden source. Everything is produced in an ecological and socially fair manner by educating, training up and employing all our own staff. All our materials are sustainably sourced, and where possible we choose natural fibres and materials. All our profits are reinvested directly back into developing this social enterprise project in Madagascar.

If you're interested in seeing how our bespoke service could work for your business we'd love to hear from you.

Romance at Ravinala

Posted on April 07, 2015 by Rebecca Barber

We've recently celebrated our first Ravinala wedding!

It was our great pleasure to see Nasaina and Jemima get married last month. The couple met whist working for our team out in Madagascar.

Jemima has been part of our team for 4 years and is the granddaughter of Augustine who has been a friend of ours for 30 years now. Jemima is an accomplished cook and works on site providing lunch each day for the workshop team and the school children.

We first met Nasaina when he attended a vocational course being run by Mary. He proved a very capable student and now works for us as manager for our raw materials and is also responsible for packing all the finished goods ready for export from Madagascar.

The ceremony itself took place in the local registry office and was followed by a reception in the pre-school building on our site. The reception was a great success and we had 100 for a sit-down meal!

We wish Nasaina and Jemima all the best as they start married life together and are looking forward to seeing them flourish over many more years of friendship and partnership.
